WhatsApp Rental Scams: Red Flags Every Seeker Should Know

Many rental conversations in India move to WhatsApp quickly — including on Roomzo after you tap contact. That is normal. Scam behaviour has patterns you can learn to spot.

Red flag: pay before visit

Anyone insisting on a booking amount before showing the room should lose your trust. Legitimate owners usually prefer serious visitors who show up.

Red flag: “I’m out of town, my agent will collect”

Sometimes real; often abused. Verify the property, verify who holds the keys, and never hand over large cash to an unknown courier without documentation.

Red flag: OTP or remote access apps

Roomzo staff will never ask for your login OTP, UPI PIN, or control of your phone. Hang up and change passwords if you shared something sensitive.

What to do instead

Shortlist, visit with a friend if possible, transfer only after agreement terms are clear, and use Roomzo’s report feature for fraudulent listings. Read our safety consent tips shown before call/WhatsApp — they exist for a reason.
