The Golden Rules of Co-Living: What Rules Should a Tenant Follow?

Renting a property is a two-way street based on trust. While every rental agreement has specific clauses, following these universal golden rules ensures a stress-free stay and guarantees you get your security deposit back.

1. Timely Payments are Non-Negotiable

The number one rule is paying your rent and utility bills on time. Set a calendar reminder 2 days before the due date to ensure smooth processing.

2. Treat the Property Like Your Own

Avoid drilling unnecessary holes in the walls, driving nails into woodwork, or undertaking DIY renovations without written permission from the owner. Keep the premises clean and well-ventilated to avoid mold.

3. Be a Considerate Neighbor

If you are in an apartment complex or a PG, keep noise levels respectable, especially after 10 PM. Dispose of garbage in designated areas and respect shared spaces like hallways and parking lots.

4. Immediate Maintenance Reporting

If a pipe bursts, a tap leaks, or an electrical socket sparks, inform the landlord immediately. Ignoring small maintenance issues can lead to massive structural damage that you might be held liable for.

5. Adhere to the Notice Period

When it is time to move out, respect the notice period outlined in your agreement (usually 30 days). Informing the landlord on the day you plan to leave is a breach of contract and will cost you your deposit.
